The US Supreme Court will hear arguments on a case regarding access to mifepristone, a drug used in medication abortion. Anti-abortion advocates claim that the drug is unsafe and that the FDA approved it without sufficient study. The lawsuit alleges that the FDA violated regulations in approving mifepristone. If upheld, a ruling by the 5th Circuit could end availability of mifepristone for medication abortion via telehealth, impacting abortion access in states where it is legal. Mifepristone, also known as RU-486, blocks a hormone called progesterone, leading to the expulsion of uterine contents. The effectiveness of mifepristone for ending pregnancies is supported by research and medical associations.
