More than 385,000 Camp Lejeune contamination claims have been filed. So far, the US government has offered to pay 114 of them
As President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris highlighted their administration’s accomplishments during their campaign, they mentioned the PACT Act, which provided new benefits for military veterans and their families affected by toxic chemicals. The PACT Act included the Camp Lejeune Justice Act, aimed at compensating victims of drinking water contamination at Camp Lejeune. However, critics argue that the initiative has been largely unsuccessful. More than 385,000 claims have been filed, but only 114 have received settlement offers. Attorneys argue that the offered settlements are often inadequate compared to the medical costs victims have incurred. Many victims have passed away while waiting for a response from the government. The Camp Lejeune Claims Unit has been set up to process these cases, but the backlog remains significant. Legislation has been proposed to address the issues surrounding the Camp Lejeune Justice Act.
