Medical Graduates Avoid Residencies in States with Abortion Restrictions #
Medical school graduates in the US are increasingly opting to avoid residency positions in states with significant abortion restrictions. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) found that applicants to residency programs in states with near-total abortion bans decreased by 4.2% compared to a 0.6% drop in states where abortion remains legal. The study highlights concerns that abortion bans can negatively impact access to care in affected states. The decrease in interest in residencies extended beyond specialties directly related to reproductive healthcare. Physicians without adequate abortion training may face difficulties managing complications related to pregnancy loss. The trend could also exacerbate physician shortages in rural and underserved areas.
