A recent observation in coastal waters near Chile has provided new insights into the hunting behavior of orcas in the region. Researchers documented a female killer whale attacking and killing a dusky dolphin, marking the first evidence of this prey species being hunted by orcas in the Humboldt Current system.
The incident, captured on video, showed the orca striking the much smaller dolphin and sending it out of the water. After the kill, other orcas joined to share the meal. This behavior offers valuable information about the local orca population, which has not yet been assigned to a specific ecotype.
Orcas are found globally, with multiple ecotypes exhibiting different appearances and behaviors, including hunting strategies and prey preferences. The Humboldt Current orcas are less studied compared to other populations, making this observation particularly significant for researchers trying to understand their habits and distribution.
The study, which analyzed over a decade of data, photos, and videos, recorded 28 orca sightings in two Humboldt Current locations. Researchers identified at least two distinct social groups, each consisting of five to six individuals, typical of orca pods led by a matriarch.
In addition to dolphins, the Humboldt Current orcas were observed hunting other prey, including leatherback sea turtles, South American fur seals, and Humboldt penguins. Evidence also suggested potential hunting of larger whale species.
This research contributes to the broader understanding of orca behavior and ecology. It highlights the diversity among killer whale populations worldwide, which can differ in diet, communication styles, and cultural practices.
The findings are crucial for conservation efforts, as the Humboldt Current orcas are currently classified as “data deficient” by relevant environmental organizations. More comprehensive knowledge about their hunting and feeding habits will aid in developing effective protection strategies.
Future research aims to further explore the social interactions of these orcas, including how they teach hunting strategies to their young. Scientists also hope to investigate other intriguing behaviors, such as potential food-sharing with humans, which has been rarely observed in other parts of the world.
The researchers note that documenting such events is challenging due to the orcas’ speed and wide-ranging habitat, making these observations particularly valuable for marine science.
